Far From Home Netflix Cast
No, Far From Home is not based on a true story. The original story can be attributed to the minds of Chinaza Onuzo and Damilola Elebe, the creators who wrote the show. Although primarily a work of fiction, the concept is drawn from Onuzo’s experiences at boarding school. In an interview with Bella Naija, she shared how the idea for the Netflix series came from her struggle as a teenager to adapt to a new environment.

“When I was 15 years old, I went to boarding school in England. It was the first time I had been outside Nigeria for a full time and the first time I was near the border. From my point of view, it was like entering a new world that I had never known. My time at this school was a transformative experience for me; I went through all the stress and wonder of my teenage years and found myself in a place where I didn’t originally belong. So when I started thinking about ‘Far from Home’, I wanted to feel my own needs, trying to find my way in a place that was not related to me. ,” Onuzo said.
Elaborating on the meaning of the title of the show and the origin of the main character, the writer said: “That’s why the show is called Far From Home; it’s about trying to find yourself when you’re separated from everything you know. To turn the idea into a show, I worked with head writer Dami Elebe, and we transformed the feeling and feel of the place into the story of Isaiah Bello, a young artist from Lagos Island who attends the Wilmer Academy. A prestigious school in Nigeria”.
Onuzo also discussed how the shows he watched in his youth inspired him to tell the same story to the world but from a Nigerian perspective. He said: “I’ve been working since the days of ‘Beverly Hills, 90210,’ ‘The OC,’ ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer,’ ‘Dawson’s Creek,’ ‘One Tree Hill,’ etc. I grew up watching shows for young adults. They’ve always been my favorite. I’ve always wanted to tell stories about young people coming of age and finding their place in the world. Young adult stories are special because they represent a time in your life full of emotion and drama. As a storyteller, this is one of those stories that’s the best thing to say.”

Author: “I want to partner with Netflix to be part of this movement and tell a story about giving voice to Nigerian youth and showing them how amazing they are… Far From Home is a show, follow your dreams no matter what. It’s fun, it’s engaging, it’s full relatable characters, and most importantly, fun. It’s a unique blend of drama, romance and thriller. We’ve never seen anything on this scale from Nigeria aimed at young people chasing their dreams. So, when Far From Home doesn’t based on reality, the characters’ real journeys and themes of social inequality, peer pressure, and friendship make their relationships very relatable.
