Microsoft is reportedly preparing to lay off thousands of employees starting tomorrow as the company looks to restructure its operations and improve operations.
Microsoft Layoff Rumor
As reported by Sky News, the company is trying to prepare for the “slowdown in the global economy” after the move. The company could cut up to five percent, or 11,000 jobs, of its workforce, according to the report.

Microsoft, which employs more than 220,000 people, including 6,000 in the UK, is said to be looking to cut around 5% of its workforce, which would mean around 11,000 jobs if correct. That number could not be verified Tuesday night, and one analyst suggested Wall Street would be surprised if the number wasn’t higher. It was also unclear whether and how many positions in the UK could be affected.
In October, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella warned that something like this could happen, echoing the same kind of language used by Apple CEO Tim Cook when he said the company wanted to “discipline” its costs.
“In a world facing growing headaches, digital technology is cutting edge… In this environment, we are focused on helping our clients do more with less while investing in secular areas of growth and management discipline of our cost structure.”
Microsoft To Cut Thousands Of Jobs
If true, Microsoft’s layoffs would represent the number of employees laid off this year by another tech giant: Facebook. The social media giant laid off around 11,000 jobs earlier this year along with the likes of Twitter, Salesforce and others.
Microsoft has yet to officially announce the layoffs, but the company is expected to issue a statement in the coming days. A spokesperson for the company responded to Sky News, saying that Microsoft “does not comment on rumors or speculation”.
