Traditional House of Elders

The West Java Traditional House of Kasepuhan is a palace or palace built by Prince Cakrabuana in 1527. The construction of this palace is for the expansion of the Pakungwati palace. Meanwhile, Prince Cakrabuana is the son of Pabu Siliwangi who is the king of the Padjajaran Kingdom.

This palace consists of 3 parts, namely:

  1. Main gate
The main gate of the palace door is divided into 2 parts, namely north and south. The southern gate is called by the name of kreteg pangwarit. This gate is in the form of a bridge. While the southern gate is called by the name lawangsanga which means door nine.
  2. The building is pancaratna.
This building is in the western part of the palace. The use of the pancaratna building is as a multipurpose space or building. This building faces the direction of the village authorities who will be received by the wedana or demang.
  3. Pangrawit building.
This building is also called by the name of pancaniti. The meaning of the five is five eyes or five superiors. The building is located in the complex of the left front and faces north.

This building has 3 functions. The first function is as a training ground for royal soldiers. The second function is for shelter or rest. the third function is as a place for the court.

Imah Rhinoceros heuay

Rhinoceros heuay has a unique meaning, that is, rhinoceros that evaporates. The uniqueness is in the part of the roof that is similar to a rhinoceros that is evaporating. When you look closely at the shape of the back roof to the edges, it will look like a yawning rhinoceros. But overall, the roof design of this house is like a dog tagog.

This heuay rhinoceros imah is often found in the Sukabumi area. The shape of the roof design is still the main roof shape for the sukabumi community. Therefore, this traditional house is still preserved today. Although there is already a minimalist house design that is said to be better, the people of Sukabumi do not forget the roof design of the heuay rhinoceros house.

Imah Togog Dog

This dog togog imah has the meaning of a seated dog house. The roof design of this house has two layers. The upper roof has a triangular shape, then the lower roof connects from the upper roof and protrudes slightly at the front. The lower roof that protrudes forward is used as a shade for the front porch. This type of roof of the house is also commonly referred to by the name of orondoy.

The design of this dog togog house is commonly found in the arrowroot area. The uniqueness of West Javanese traditional houses is also often used in modern designs, especially in tourism places. This is to introduce and preserve the traditional houses of the West Javanese community.

The shape of the roof of this house is still often used in the local community. In addition, there are also resting places that use it. For example, hotels, villas, bungalows and homestays also maintain the design of this house.

Imah Jolopong

This West Javanese traditional house Jolopong has the meaning of drooping or perpendicular. The shape of the roof of this house is very simple. The roof design has the shape of an isosceles triangle. Imah or jolopong house is also called by the name of suhuan. For the Sundanese people in general, this house is quite special. Because the shape of this house is simple, so it is easy to make and does not require a lot of material.

The shape of this jolopong house is often found in the arrowroot area. However, some people in the West Java region also use this form of house. Some government buildings also use this house design.

Imah Perahu Kumereb

Imah perahu kumureb is commonly called imah perahu tengkurep. The meaning of using Indonesian from the traditional house of the people of West Java is an overturned boat or a prone boat. The design of this house is in the form of a trapezoidal plane, so it is similar to an overturned boat.

Of the existing types, tengkurep houseboats are so rarely found. Because this house has a weakness, the weakness is that it leaks easily. Most of the west java areas have high rainfall, making the design of this house ineffective. But there are some areas that still use the design of this tengkurep houseboat. Precisely in the ciamis area where this traditional house is still found. but there are not many of them

Imah capit scissors

Imah capit scissors is the oldest traditional house in West Java. Another name for this scissors imah capit is susuhunan. Then there is also another designation for the design of this house, namely undagi or architectural arrangement. The meaning of the scissors imah capit is scissors or a knife that is in a crossed position. In Sundanese itself, capit means to clamp or pinch something. While the scissors in Indonesian are still scissors in Sundanese, a tool used for cutting.

The design of the roof of the house is similar to scissors or a knife being in a crossed position. Both at the end of the front and back roofs there is a bamboo. The position of the bamboo formed the letter “x”.
The existence of this house is very rarely found, because this traditional house is the most ancient house. For now, the big sabagian of the people of West Java uses minimalist house designs and other traditional houses. However, some tourist attractions still maintain the design of this traditional house to introduce the custom.

Imah julang ngapak

The meaning of imah julang ngapak is a bird that flaps its wings. Likewise with the roof design of this house which is like a bird flapping its wings. The shape of the roof of this house widens on each side. At the top is a wood in the shape of the letter ” v “, as a whole resembling a bird flapping its wings.

On the ridge, it is equipped with scissor cagak or capit hurang. That form has the function of preventing seeping rainwater. Especially the confluence section of the roof. The roof of this julang ngapak house is found in the Tasikmalaya area. The most special thing about this Sundanese traditional house is that it is used on well-known campuses in Indonesia. Several buildings on the ITB campus use the roof shape of this traditional house.
